Classic Black and White Wedding from Brittany Janelle Photography

There are so many things about this wedding from Brittany Janelle Photography that send the butterflies to fluttering. The classic, yet glamorous look of black coming together with white is almost more pretty than I can take. Notice I said almost :) Because, really, you can never have too much pretty. I’m in love with the layers of tulle in the bride’s dress, the pretty blue shoes that she gives sneak peeks to. I adore the look of the groom and his men in a classic (bow tie included) tuxedo. I’m head-over-heels for the black bridesmaids dresses paired with bouquets in the colors of the rainbow. But it’s the portraits of the bride and groom (and the love story of these two) that really set the butterflies to swooning. Between the pick-ups, the twirling, the dipping, and that insanely amazing kiss in the wine cellar, well, I don’t think the butterflies will be stopping their swooning anytime soon.

It was March 20, 2011. Both Jeff and Catherine had broken up with their significant others, realizing they weren’t the one for them. Both were tired of the dating scene, tired of trying to find the one. They were both equally ready to start a life with their best friend. But, by the end of this day, couldn’t help wondering if the dating scene was hopeless.

In seeking consolation that same week, Catherine went to one of her good friends at work, Jason. In jest, and feeling like there were no good guys left within the state boundaries, she asked him if he knew of any outside of Arizona. Not really expecting a serious answer, she was surprised when he said that he did. A good friend who lived in Seattle, who loved being outside, loved Christ, and loved to travel. It was too good to be true, she thought, especially since he lived in Seattle, and she was a sunshine girl.

Meanwhile, two days later in Seattle, Jeff was resuming normal life, wondering where this woman who would be his best friend through life could be. While he was already receiving offers of friends willing to connect him with eligible women, Jeff turned to someone he trusted, an old friend, who had traveled the world with him to 43 different countries, named Jason. After relaying the news of the breakup, Jeff asked if by chance Jason knew of any quality girls there in Arizona, as he was not having any luck finding one in the state of Washington. Jason told him that actually there was one girl who he worked with that Jeff might be interested in – she loved God, loved the outdoors, and loved to travel. Needless to say, Jeff was interested.

On April 4, 2011, Jeff sent the first of many emails to Catherine. Both parties’ interests were immediately peaked. On April 10th, they talked on the phone for 2 hours.

June 23, 2011, was the day Catherine and Jeff met face-to-face. Along with their mutual friend, Jason, they met at the Valley Ho (a well-known hotel in Phoenix). She’d been at a wedding earlier in the evening and so was dressed to the nines in a formal strapless black dress when Jeff first laid eyes on her. He said his jaw almost dropped when he saw her.

From Brittany’s website: Catherine gave Jeff notes she had written to her future husband over the last 10 years as a wedding gift. Truly amazing. I loved his reactions while reading some of them!

The next morning, they went to breakfast just the two of them (also considered their first date). She was so entranced by Jeff and his adventures in Jerusalem, she almost didn’t eat. As she sat mesmerized by his eyes and smile, he was building city diagrams with the extra forks and knives on their table.

Two days later, the day they started dating and the day Jeff was supposed to fly back to Seattle. They said goodbye at the airport, not sure when they would see each other again, but committed to making it work. Ten minutes after leaving him, she got a call from Jeff. He’d missed his flight and the next one bound for Seattle wasn’t until the next morning. Her fear that he would be frustrated when she saw him was immediately dispelled when she saw him walking back from the concourse, the biggest smile on his face. He told her that he’d much rather spend the time with her than at work the next morning.

In the parking garage, Jeff suggested they climb the nearest mountain (which happened to be Papago, a mountain reserve in the middle of Phoenix) and watch the sunset. They got to the top just after the sun had slipped behind the horizon. But the dusk was perfect. They stood there together for a long moment before Jeff asked if she would dance with him. He turned his iPhone to a Nora Jones Pandora station, and there they stood, on top of the world, dancing in the sunset. As they danced, Jeff told her how he’d been searching all his life for a woman who could “keep up” with him. Catherine told him she wasn’t sure if she could. He said, “Well, maybe it’s time for me to slow down.” My heart be still. And as their eyes met, soon so did their lips, in their first kiss. Swoon.

They didn’t exchange those three little words until September when she visited him in Seattle. After a BBQ Jeff had at his house to introduce his friends to Catherine and vice versa, she realized how much she loved seeing him open his home and be so hospitable to so many people, and at the same time, still make her feel so special. When they said goodbye that night, she said, “Jeff, I love you.” He said, “I was going to tell you tomorrow on top of a mountain in Leavenworth (where his parents live).” She felt awful. But he laughed and said, “Catherine, I love you. And you’d better not worry about this. I’ll tell you why I love you tomorrow.” And he did. He held her in his arms on this mountain in Leavenworth and told her all the reasons why he loved her. Seriously. I don’t think my heart has ever swooned so much.

On Saturday, March 3, 2012, Catherine was once again visiting Jeff in Seattle. He’d picked her up very early in the morning so they could get an early start on the ski slopes. But since it was the most awful skiing conditions either of them had ever experienced, they drove back down the mountain in time to get cleaned up and get drinks with friends. According to Jeff, they would probably be “very tired” and “in need of some caffeine” before they got drinks, so a stop at Starbucks was a must along the way.

The stop at Starbucks turned into a walk on the beach at Lake Washington. As usual, Jeff got out his handy-dandy tripod for his camera so they could take a couple pictures with the beautiful waning sun in the background. What she didn’t know was that he’d set the camera to record what happened next.

He started talking about coffee and the awful Christmas campaign Starbucks had had the previous Christmas, the one that irked Catherine (who was a grammar nerd) to no end. “Oh yeah,” she recalled, “the ‘Let’s Merry’ campaign.” “On that topic…” he said and turned to look at the friends they were supposed to have drinks with appeared, holding a huge sign that read in painted letters, “LET’S MERRY?” She felt like she was in a slow motion movie. Everything clicked then, and she turned back around to him, she found him on his knee with a ring box popped open in his hand. He said, “Catherine, I want to love you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?” She’s not sure if it was the gust of wind, or the picture of this incredible man whom she loved and admired asking her to be his wife, that took her breath away. Regardless, she said yes!

{From the Bride} Our wedding day was a blessing and amazingly, I remember all of it. My most favorite moment was after the ceremony, Jeff and I and our whole wedding party rushed into the church kitchen after the recessional because we wanted to avoid a receiving line. In the kitchen, although we were squished, everyone was all smiles, hugs, laughs, and excitement. We had made it! Long distance and all. And now our adventure of life was beginning.

We did have a first look and I am so glad we did. It helped calm my nerves seeing Jeff, and just being held by him before the big production of the actual wedding.

We danced to L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole.

The day was everything we hoped and dreamed! It was amazing.

{Advice for Couples} Best advice: Read books together. Books that bring up topics you might not naturally talk about and figure out where opinions differ and how you will resolve things once you are one flesh. Two books I would recommend are “Boundaries” by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, and “The DNA of Relationships” by Gary Smalley. These helped Jeff and I immensely in our self-development, our relationship, and our relationships with others.
